Holiday

27 Nov

Apparently I have been taking the concept of the Thanksgiving holiday to heart and have done not much. Did a little joining. But crochet has been lacking. That will probably continue through the weekend, truth be told.

Thursday is Thanksgiving here in the States. For those not in the States just imagine us spending the day eating mass quantities of food, complaining that we’ve eaten too much, and then taking just one more sliver of pie. Just like Jell-O, there’s always room for pie.

The last couple of years it’s been my job to cook the meats. I do it in the crockpot. So today I will begin my cooking. I make a Turkey breast for us, and chicken wings for my mom because she doesn’t like turkey. Which begs the question as to why we have to have turkey in the first place. But we’ve always had turkey and that’s the way it will always be. I’ll do the wings early and seal them up in foil and have them ready to slip into the oven at my folks to reheat. The turkey goes in the crock in the wee hours of Thursday morning to time it just right for the meal. Can’t be heating that thing up again for some reason. Tradition baffles me pretty much.

Thanksgiving is also a time to reflect on the things one is thankful for. I’m thankful that I’m still around after my illness and can be reasonably ambulatory. I’m thankful for the MANY kindnesses shown me over the year. I’m thankful that I still have my parents around to visit (despite the odd traditions and lack of enthusiasm about trying something new). I’m thankful I am able to buy the turkey and wings to complain about cooking. I’m glad I can still crochet, despite the fact that my left hand wants to thwart me. And I’m thankful for all of you who read my little musings on a regular basis!

So if you’re in the States, happy Thanksgiving. If you’re not, have another visual of the over eating and then be thankful you’re not in on all that silliness!

Happy holiday.

Thanksgiving is the one American tradition that I have always thought made excellent sense – the concept behind it, that is, not so much the food-stuffing. We all need to be thankful for more, and cognisant of the good things in our lives. Happy crockpotting. Rather you than me.
