Ship’s Wheel 2014

Ships Wheel 2014

Today’s Square: Ship’s Wheel
Size: 5 inch
Pattern By: Janie Herrin
Hook: H
Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic RHSS navy; Caron Colour Perfect slate Blue.
Pattern from: Ravelry

Notes: Another revisit. I first made this one in 2012 and it ruffled up on me because I did my FP stitches too tight. I like this one much better. It’s a pretty easy square to do. From the 50 Fabulous Crochet Squares book.

Size: 7 inch
Pattern By: Martha Brooks Stein

Dainty Diamond 2014

Dainty Diamond 2014

Today’s Square: Dainty Diamond
Size: 7 inch
Pattern By: Janie Herrin
Hook: H
Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic RHSS turqua; Caron Colour Perfect slate Blue.
Pattern from: Ravelry

Notes: Revisited this one. I first did it in February 2013. This time I did a two color treatment. I might do it again in a single color. I changed the last round to HDC to get a 7 inch square. From the 50 Fabulous Crochet Squares book.

Today’s Square: Square 39
Size: 4 inch
Pattern By: Jean Leinhauser
Hook: H
Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic RHSS navy, turqua; Caron Colour Perfect slate Blue.
Pattern from: Ravelry

Notes: Dang it all. This is just a basic traditional granny square. I like traditional grannies, but I kind of think they’re out of place in books like this when you’re expecting something more involved. I added a round of DC to bring it to 4 inches. From the 99 Granny Squares to Crochet book.

41 of 99Today’s Square: Square 41
Size: 6 inch
Pattern By: Tammy Kreimeyer
Hook: H
Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic RHSS navy, turqua; Caron Colour Perfect slate Blue.
Pattern from: Ravelry

Notes: A pretty simple octagon that works up fast. On the last round the pattern calls for CH three all the way around, but I changed it to CH2 except in the corners. I think this motif would make an interesting lacy shawl or throw with a bunch connected. From the 99 Granny Squares to Crochet book.

Beauty in Excellence

Beauty in ExcellenceToday’s Square: Beauty in Excellence
Size: 10 inch
Pattern By: Margaret MacInnis
Hook: H
Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic RHSS dk plum, turqua; Caron Colour Perfect slate Blue.
Pattern from: Ravelry

Notes: This thing was a bear. It took about 9 hours to finish it (including taking round by round photos for the 2014 BAMCAL on Ravelry). It has stitch patterns, then stitch patterns inside the stitch patterns. I had to resort to printing out a page of just the sub instructions to keep it all straight. The actual working of the pattern is really pretty easy once you just figure out what’s going on and just do it. I guess my brain doesn’t do well with sub sub instructions!

Holiday Ornament Afghan Square

Holiday Ornament SquareToday’s Square: Holiday Ornament
Size: 11.5 inch
Pattern By: Julie Yeager
Hook: H
Yarn: Worsted weight acrylic RHSS yellow, royal, pumpkin.
Pattern from: Ravelry

Notes: Not one of my favorite squares. It’s got an interesting construction, but makes for a VERY dense square. The side FP stitches need to be done VERY loosely, which I didn’t accomplish. The sides of my block pulled in a lot. I changed the last round to DC from SC to try and get it to square up a little. The construction also leaves little “pockets” on the back which could be toe-catchers. I think catching the skipped stitches in round 8 with the Round 9 both loop stitches might help. Or some tacking. This is the November Filler square for the 2014 BAMCAL on Ravelry.
