What I’m up to in 2013

18 Dec

Of course you see my links to Ravelry everywhere and I really enjoy that site. It’s heavy on the Knitters I think, but there are lots of wonderful groups that you can join in–and a lot of them have nothing to do with crafts! And their project notebooks are invaluable for keeping up with what projects you’ve done.

I thought I’d share with you a list of the groups that I moderate or run. If you check out Ravelry (and I hope you do) then come by and see what’s going on in these groups! You can join any of them at any time. You don’t have to start right at the first. Sometimes it’s fun doing the catch up!

2013 Crochet Block a Month CAL
This is a fantastic group. It’s been ongoing for several years now and I only joined in the middle of the year in 2011. But they’re entirely responsible for making my skills what they are today! The 2013 group is just gearing up. Check out the 2012 group to see how much fun we had!

50 Fabulous Squares
This group is working through the book “50 Fabulous Crochet Squares” from Leisure Arts. I choose two squares per month for everyone to work on. I occasionally have a contest in there, too!

99 Granny Squares
This group is working the book “99 Granny Squares to Crochet” from Leisure Arts. I choose one square per month for everyone to work on. This group is not as active but maybe we’ll have some new people in the new year!

2013 Blockheads
This is for all those who are committing to crocheting a certain number of squares during 2013. I was the overachiever in last year’s group with my daily square. This year I’m only going to commit to 3 a week!

No Sheep For Me
I’ve just been handed this group recently and am looking to gear it up a little more in 2013. It’s for people who don’t like to use wool or other animal fibers. Whether it makes you itch, it’s against your principles, or you just plain don’t like it, this is the group for you. We’ll be exploring alternatives and advantages to those alternatives.

I belong to several other groups on Ravelry but these are the ones I hang around in the most and moderate. Come on over and join in! The more the merrier. Oh, and I’m known as Scraplyn on Ravelry.

And of course I’ll be here blogging things, too. Some squares. Some other projects. Some reviews. Some tips and tricks. Who knows!

How do you end up starting and being handed groups? I’d like to do some groups like that with my cross stitch

It’s easy to start a group on Ravelry. I generally look around to see if there’s already a group using the premise that I have in mind and check it out first. If there’s nothing to suit you, just go to the groups tab an start one up. They are a bit of work because unless you stay active and engaged your members will wander away. The group I got handed, the admin was wanting to step down and asked for a volunteer. I was the only one that raised my hand. On one group that I oversee I just asked if I could do it as I noticed the owner/mods weren’t around much. Sometimes all it takes is a note to the administrator and you can take over if they’ve grown tired of it.

I admire you. It must take a major lot of time and energy to keep the groups active and enjoyable. You’re a true inspiration. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! It’s not too bad Some of them aren’t as active as others. The BAMCAL one is the one that keeps me hopping. I was a moderator in 2012 also and with 1200+ members and LOTS of them very active it’s a very busy (and fun) place!

Ha! Thanks again! Luckily with that group there are several other moderators spread out over various countries in the world. There’s always someone on line to answer questions. It’s one of the best groups I’ve ever moderated actually. Everyone is respectful of each other and their yarn choices. 😀 It’s a nice pleasant group of people.
